Maybe it has nothing to do with your video card. You could try re-installing Office 2008 completely or removing your user files
CODE
"/Users/your_account/Library/Application Support/Microsoft"
and
"/Users/your_account/Library/Preferences/Microsoft"
An experiment also worth trying would be to create a new user account and find out if Word crashes when running it from there.
Good luck!
EDIT: As I suspected, this is probably not a video driver issue (or OpenGL for that matter) but a known Office 2008 problem.
I found this interesting thread, googling around:
http://www.mcgimpsey.com/macoffice/office/...ting.html#fontsIf fixing the file permissions (via disk utility) and looking for corrupted fonts does not work, then you can try reading the rest of the original help thread, here:
http://www.tech-archive.net/Archive/Mac/mi...2/msg00773.htmlI would, however, start by repairing the permissions and creating a new user account first.
EDIT2:
Ok, I remembered having a similar problem with Word in Windows. The problem turned out to be a corrupted "Normal.dot" file.
Here's how to fix that issue under OS X:

EDIT4: I also speak german, so feel free to PM me if you have trouble understanding the instructions.
