Does anyone know if I restore to an external HD will it ERASE everything on the hard drive??
Thanks

I'd like to know this as well!

another question:
if I restore the .dmg to an external HD how many files will be an the external HD.
I'd like to know because I have data on my external HD and I'd like to delete the restored .dmg from the external HD after I have installed leopard.
So I'm interested in if there are many hidden files on the external HD or if I can easily delete the restored .dmg from my external data HD.

thx
love4mac
The restore method erase everything in your external hard drive.
Read carefully the small tutorial of mine in the previus page.
First back up your files and then use disk utility to restore the dmg image

About release 9a410: I noted a new feature on the finder window, pretty cool!! Called quick look, a floatant or full screen black window (iphoto look) folder image with small information. Not so usefull but cool!!
this version crash very often!!
New layout for the network preferences (the tiger's are better)

Hummm, still lot of work to do?

I have tried pretty much everything so far (in this post) to install leopard and nothing has worked. The furthest I have got to being successful has been t get to the white startup screen with the spinning apple logo on it. I have a Macbook with 1GB Ram, 3 Partitions and the file from the torrent (leopard_client_9a410.dmg)

PLEASE HELP ME!

Hi all,

Got a question about the Leopard Installation procedure,

Does somebody tries to install update Tiger to Leopard on the same partition ? What results does it give ?

Thx by advance,
Daxboy
Just wondering...

Have a Powerbook g4 and an external usb harddrive...
Can i create an image of my whole internal harddrive with tiger using ccc and copy it to the external hdd,
Then do a clean install of leopard on my powerbook.
If i'm not satisfied with leopard use the image of tiger i created and bring it back to my powerbook without losing any data??

Thnx for helping me out!
Daxboy
Anyone willing to answer maybe?
Cmon i'm sure you can do it!

Hey guys, I've read over the thread trying multiple things, something that I don't think has been mentioned here was that it's a good idea to lock the dmg after downloading b4 mounting it as it corrupts it otherwise or something along those lines. I'm on an iBook G4 1.33GHz 1Gig RAM, OS 10.4.10... since I don't have a DVD burner or a firewire iPod (just a 5G iPod Video), I copied the dmg to a windows box of a friend of mine (running Vista Home Premium). I tried using transmac but failed miserably (jeez that proggie is not very intuitive). So next I converted the .DMG to .CDR (ISO) using the terminal "hdiutil convert leopard.dmg -format UDTO -o leopard.iso" and then burt that image on my friend's machine using the newest version of Nero Burning Rom onto a DL DVD. My computer recognizes the DVD with (in finder at least) appears to have all the files intact, and in System Preferences under Boot Disk I can select it but when I restart I get the old OS 9 logo and the folder symbol which flashes a couple times before loading my regular tiger. I know someone else had the same symptoms a few pages back but there wasn't any follow up, I imagine that the permissions or the file system or something didn't convert properly. Could someone post a tutorial on how exactly to get the dmg burned on a PC? I'd greatly appreciate it. Also, when I press Option during boot nothing happens, I don't get a list of startup disks or anything, I've pressed Option right after the Mac Chime and right at the blue startup screen and various other places. Anyway, thanks for your help! =)
turpentine
use alcohol 120% on a pc to burn a dmg, you can score it wherever you got leopard. that should solve your problems.
Schicksal
hi guys,

i have the same problem as morgan on the first page.
i have burned it on a DL DVD with my iMac (intel C2D)
now i want to install it on my MBP (intel CD).
if i boot from the DL DVD:
QUOTE
I get the boot icon that is a circle with a line through it (looks like the no-smoking symbol if that helps)

and yes, my partition sheme is GUID.
what am i doing wrong.

(don't think about my english please smile.gif)

--------edit--------
i like to install it on:
MacBook Pro 2.16 CD
and running OSX 10.4.10
but i like to install 10.5 as single OS an my book
JaE-V
anyone installed this on the new version of parallels yet?..
That Guy
If you want you can restore the leopard dmg to an ipod, faster install than a DVD and doesn't require a DL burner.

Hello
Many of users writes that they did install it, but no one reply on posts like this:
i have g4 mac and con not boot from RESTORED leopard image on external USB HDD
so, can some one describe how did they install it on g4 using EXTERNAL USB HDD and restore function
every time i try - disk becomes unbootable!
Thank you in advance
Schicksal
can only discribe how to solve my problem with DL DVD and the circle with a line through it:

i burned it with toast8 but this way doesn't work. it's not bootable.
burn the image with "festplattendienstprogramm" (i don't know the name of this tool in english)
and everything is fine.

Wait, is there a bete version of Leopard, or is it out already? What's going on?
Cougarcat
I used the restore option to put Leopard on my Firewire HD, but OS X refuses to recognize it as bootable. It appears in system disk, but if I restart it boots into tiger. Same thing happens if I press option on restart. I have a PB G4--any ideas?

Here is my method for installing Leopard Beta alongside Tiger on the same physical internal drive.
(this method works on intel based macs only)

1. Partition your hard drive with Bootcamp. (non-destructive partitioning)
[I gave about 30GB to Leopard and left the rest of my 250GB drive to Tiger.]

2. Reboot your system with the Tiger installation disk in your drive holding down the "c" key.
Use the Tiger installation disk to run "Disk Utility" instead of Leopard Beta Disk (more reliable utility)

3. After booting from DVD in Disk Utility select your newly created partition in the left colum
then goto the Erase Tab. Make sure Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) is selected for the new Partition format
and click the erase button in the lower left.
(Doing this erases the Windows formated Partition and creates a Mac OS formatted partition in it's place.)

4. Now reboot your Mac with the Lepoard WWDC disk in and run a full installation on your newly created
partition.

This dual boot method has worked flawless for me.

If anyone has question feel free to PM me.

What do you mean by (non-destructive partitioning)?

I think I didnt do the non-destructive partitioning what ever that is. When try and do step 3 is says I cant delete the windows "partition" because something about it not being mounted. Then I click mount to see if that would fix it but it wouldnt mount.

PLEASE HELPP

I want to use leopard really bad I have a singal layer DVD already burned I just need a way to partion my hard drivewith out deleting all my data on my MAC HD.

THANKS PLEASE HELP

What I did (WARNING: if you do this wrong, you may screw up your partitions = DATA LOSS. Don't follow this if you don't feel a bit comfortable. No warranties, etc.)
Does need: Commandline skills
Does NOT need: Any external HDD/iPod, DL DVDs, etc.

What it does: Installs Leopard to a new partition, keeping Tiger and all your data (back it up first though!!).

1) Use Bootcamp Assistant to restore everything to one big partition, if you have to
2) Open a Terminal. (If you're not comfortable in it, stop now!)
3) For an internal disk @ 160GB (Macbook Pro):
$ sudo su -
# diskutil resizeVolume disk0s2 limits
# diskutil resizeVolume disk0s2 118G JHFS+ "Leopard Install" 12G JHFS+ "Leopard" 18G (this creates two new partitions: 12GB for the install, 18GB for Leopard, and leaves the original Tiger partition at 118GB)
4) Reboot
5) Open Disk Utility, format the two new partitions with Journaled HFS+
6) Restore the leopard install image onto the Leopard Install partition (drag the image/partition from the left pane; check Erase destination, UNcheck ship checksums if it's checked)
7) Reboot, hold alt/option on chime sound, boot from the OS X Install partition
8) Install Leopard to the "Leopard" partition
9) After installation is complete, in Leopard, open up a new terminal and
$ sudo su -
# diskutil list
# diskutil mergePartitions JHFS+ 'Tiger (or any name)' disk0s2 disk0s3 - GET THIS RIGHT from the list you got in step #10! Get it wrong and you'll either wipe away Leopard, or wipe away everything if you accidently type disk0s1 or such for the first partition.
12) DONE! You now have three partitions: One EFI-partition (don't touch this), one with Tiger, and one 18GB holding Leopard!

Good luck and don't blame me if you screw it up! It worked for me, though.

I tried this except I couldn't partition my ipod without disk utility throwing an error at me

I seem to be having some real difficulties installing leopard.
When I go to install the system, it can't detect either of my two partitions.
It's as though it doesn't detect my disks at all.

When I load up the disk utility it detects the drive, but not the partitions...

is there something really obvious that I'm missing?

I have the exact same problem!

It worked the first time I tried, but half way through an archive and install it bummed out. Now nothing I do will make it recognise my partitioned disk. Booting up on the 466 partition doesn't even recognise the tiger partition blink.gif

I'm led to believe that the installer screwed with my GUID partition scheme somehow. What's wrong?

Install failed, first time around, second time around it cannot see my primary disk.

According to another user, it works if you use the A466 installation disk to repair.

I have tried repairing with the Tiger installation though, and I no longer have the 466 installation disk.

Hi Guys, sorry if I am asking something already covered, but I really cannot find any hint about it...
I have build 9a527 as an ISO file... I am losing my mind how to install it.
I have tried burning onto a double layer DVD but once mounted, opened and double clicked on the installer and asked to restart, the machine does not boot from the dvd.
can you please explain me where do I do wrong and how should I do step by step..
Thanks very very much!
Cubric
have you tried pressing 'c' while restarting?
Island
Yes I have tried but nothing.. I am now trying to convert ISO into DMG with disc utility ... another question... once converted into DMG should I restore it before burning or can I burn it straight away always through Disc utility?
Thanks again...
I think that by the time I can install it, the golden version will be out already!
Island
Done, I have converted the ISO into DNG with disk utility, then burned onto a DL DVD always through disk utility and everything worked flawlessly.

Hi, I followed the instruction to burn leo onto a single layer DVD and updated it over my current tiger installation.

One Word - Flawless!

Everything runs perfect. Even in WOW I getting a better performance than on tiger (approx 4-5 fps more).

So far I noticed 2 single bugs. One with Transmit and Leo. After a couple of time during upload to a ftp I got a "please restart your mac"
and the on screen symbols when I decrease the volume via apple keyboard, the icon is just a white box. Strangly within frontrow the icon
looks normal.

Iam on a Macbook Black Version 1,1 2 GB Ram with a new apple usb keyboard and Apple Display 20".

Hi fellows,
I have Leo 9a559 just downloaded, after burning the .dmg on a DVD can I install that on my Macintosh HD and choose a clean install like I did with the Tiger DVD (with erasing the old OS) or is it neccessary to make a second partition because it is still a beta software? I want to buy Leo anyway so I don´t mind if it´s still buggy and am ready to live without Tiger for the next 6 days...

ok, i have install os x5 but more difficult !!!! (and fun too)

Is there someone who achived a network install ?

ie : On os x server : use "Sytem image utility", make a "network install" .nbi (in fact it's make a new .dmg with a boot rom for bootp client) that u put in your /Library/Netboot/NetbootSP0/ and then start Netboot service (daemon)
and then start your mac client (not the server) with N key hold ...

For me , the mac client (mac mini intel) found the network , retrieve an ip , boot on the image but hang on and power off ? did u issue this kind of thing ?

As someone try to do a simple network install ?

Aight, this is what I am having problems with. I have put the Leopard ISO on a DVD, but I just want to "overwrite" Tiger. Instead of Dual Booting. Is this possible?

Hi all,
same old question, and it probably has already been asked but...

Ive got Leopard, and I am trying to install on to a MacBook (2Ghz, 1Gig Ram & 80Gig HDD model).
I have both SL and DL versions on disks, but every time I go to install it restarts and boots directly into Tiger.

I have tried holding down C on boot, Option Key, D, everything that has been suggested, but still it just goes past ignoring the pressed keys and boots into Tiger.

Disk utils wont allow me to partition the HDD, and I dont have a firewire conection for my Ipod (60gig).
I also tried setting the boot disk to the install disk, but still boots to Tiger.

What am I doing wrong???
mdjs2002
biggrin.gif
Installed and working 100%

I got a firewire cable for my 60gig Ipod, and used Disk utils to copy the full DMG file over, restarted holding the option key and installed 10.5 with no hassels.

Since then I have used Bootcamp, and set a 20gig partition, and installed Vista on to it, just for the hell of it, and since I was on a roll. The only plan I have for Vista is to let me see how it runs, i plan to remove it soon enough and reclaim the lost space.

[Edited to add]
And yes, I did download 10.5, from the newsgroups, but I dont feel guilty as I am buying it when I order my new Mac pro in the next month.

I just upgraded my configuration to be "fully" compatible with osx. So now I have the following hardware:

• Asrock ConRoe 1333 667 mobo / earlier: ASUS P5GDC Deluxe
• Intel Core2Duo 6750 CPU + factory cooler / earlier: P4 540 3.2GHz + Titan cooler
• 2x1 GB 667 MHz DDR II 667 RAM / 1024 MB DDRI RAM
• Captiva 7300GS 256MB PCIe VGA Card / ATi x600 128MB PCIe VGA Card
• 80 GB SATA internal HDD
• NEC 4550 PATA DVD-RW
• Standard external USB case with 250 GB PATA HDD
• original apple keyboard + usb mouse / PC keyboard+usb mouse
• Samsung SyncMaster 940n lcd monitor

The upgrade matched with my waits, now i'm writeing this post on my osx 10.5.1 (with EFI) hackintosh. smile.gif

Here's my step-by-step install:

1. Download and burn IATKOS 1.0 DVD
2. Boot up with install dvd and at the begining of the installation process format your boot partition with DiskUtil.
3. Follow the installers instrucions and install osx.
3.1. I added the following patches: modified AppleSMBIOS.kext, Nvidia drivers, EFI patch.
4. After install in the wellcome screen I needed to pull off my ethernet cable otherwise os didn't allowed me to go through the "user data inport" point.
5. Reboot and wait for os loading.
6. If Leo doesn't loads, you should try to boot again with install disk and use Darwin Boot installer in utilities. I needed to install manually Dawin in my disk0s1 partition.
7. Reboot and enjoy osx.

That's all normally, BUT:

I osx didn't recognized my DVD-RW, Time Machine and Missing Sync didn't worked. So:

8. I googled and found the next: http://forum.osx86scene.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2065
9. Downloaded the ToH kexts and installed to /System/Library/Extensions.
10. Repaired permissions and I did a reboot.
11. Here was nice kerner panic. sad.gif
12. Reinstalled IATKOS 1.0 over the freshly installed Leo. (see above the install process), but didn't format the HDD this time.
13. Everything worked perfectly, BUT I didn't had administrator rights.
14. Googled and found a nice how-to: you only need to do the following to make a new admin in single user mode:
14.1. boot osx with +s key pressed on boot or darwin with -s flag.
14.2. mount -uw /
14.3. rm var/db/.AppleSetupDone
14.4. reboot
15. Now go though again on postinstall steps. (user data, .mac offers, ect..)
16. Load osx and delete your previously added user(s).
17. Enjoy.

Maybe this is something configuration-dependent bug, but I hope my lines could be help someone.

If you have any idea how to avoid the double installation, pls write... or PM me with any suggests or questions.

Hey Kiwi, dude you're on AMD Ath,on so I thought that you can just help me out. I downloaded that Kalway DVD of Leopard for my system. The sys config are :-

AMD Athlon 4400+ X2
Jetway JM2A-692-GDG Mobo with ATI x1250 onboard graphics with SM 2.0 and SB 600 Southbridge,
WD 250 GB SATA II HDD w. 16 MB Buffer,
Sony DRU 835-A DVD Writer and 19" Viewsonic 1912w TFT w 1440*900 @ 75 Hz.

Now, when I try to install Leopard on my system I get an error Cannont Copy files to the Partition from /Volumes/System (I think so). Then it asks me to restart the system. I've tried installing a number of times but I get the same error again & agai. What could be the matter? I've formatted my HDD as 30 GB Mac with FAT32 for Leopard and the HDD is set to run in AHCI mode with SATA enabled thorugh BIOS. Please help!!

Update:-

I got it installed on my system. But the problem is that after the sucessful installation I don't see any Mac bootloader, the partition table is
/dev/sda1 - Windows Xp
/dev/sda2 - Leopard
/dev/sda5 - Shared
/dev/sda6 - OpenSUSE 10.3
/dev/sda7 - Ubuntu
/dev/sda8 - swap
/dev/sda9 - Music & Movies

Please help, it staright away boots into OpenSUSE's bootloader, I even tried to add Mac OS X by editing the menu.lst file in OpenSUSE and adding the entry of Leopard via the chainloader option. but all in vain, it says, HFS+ partition error. What should I do, the data is safe and intact. I formatted the partition as HFS+ Journled and it is a primary partition.
